Day 1 in Hong Kong

Sorry all munchasaurus, it has been a while but I am finally back and settled from my Asia travels, which means do expect a lot of my coming up posts being based on my travels experience and hopefully you'll enjoy them ;)

Munchasurus Pi have mainly visited 2 places with Grumpasurus, Hong Kong and Japan. First, let me kick start with Hong Kong, which is actually my home city.

Being an island, Hong Kong has always been renown for its fresh seafood, so the first stop for us is Lau Fau Shan (a place famous for sea food, specialising in oysters). Arriving at about 11, we were too late for the seafood market but too early for restaurants... kind of an awkward time plus it's a Monday. Though there was a few market stalls that were still opened, it's quite empty:

The clams were nearly bigger than my hands.

The market and restaurants were all filled with tanks, it might sound crazy compared to the European way, you basically pick your seafood on the spot, point at the ones that looks yummy and they freshly prepare the food for you straight away. As it was an awkward time for the market, we decided to have an early seafood lunch, looking at the signs with lots of award winning and newspaper article, we decided to give this place a go; Happy Seafood Restaurant (歡樂海鮮酒家).

As we were suppose to, we went outside to look at the tank and picked several things. Even though the seafood was ultra fresh, I thought the place's price was on the expensive end. I'm sure we could have picked a place half the price just because they did not have any award and seafood will be just as fresh.

Abalone; a type of sea snails, something I have never seen in UK.

Bei Fung Tong fried Crab (避風唐炒蟹) was the best out of all. The crab was deep fried before and then fried with herb and spice which brought out the freshness of the crab. As long as you don't mind getting your fingers dirty then I totally recommend this is the dish.

Munchable score (5 Max)
Taste: ** The crab dish was great, and the special fried rice was good too, but the rest is just so so
Locations: ** Lau Fan Shan really isn't the easiest place to get to in Hong Kong...
Atmosphere: * a very typical restaurant, you can tell not much thought was put into it.
Price: * As i mentioned, i feel this place was on the expensive side, there was definitely cheaper restaurants around.

After the meal, we went back to the city area and walked passed an Haagen-Daz cafe, Munchasurus Pi nearly went crazy and brought an gigantic ice cream cake which where was no way we could of finished it before we left Hong Kong:

Isn't the cake so adorable? I just love the octopus one with a little top hat, thought i'll probably be very sad to be munching it. Though thanks to grumpasurus I resisted the temptation. I just wish we have more Haagen-Daz cafe in UK and plenty of amazing looking cakes like this.

Puffs - What more do I have to say? Asian is surprisingly amazing at french patisserie and bakery. Cookie puff and original puff with vanilla filling was both amazing. Green tea eclair, is now officially Grumpasurus' second favourite flavour (and that must mean a lot to a french man right?).

This is just one of many chains of Arome Bakery Room (東海堂), but I don't think all of them do freshly made puffs

Munchable score (5 Max)
Taste: ****
Locations: ?? (There a plenty Arome Bakery Room in Hong Kong but I have no idea which one do puffs)
Atmosphere: *** Nicely design bakery, and it looks clean and tidy.
Price: *** Not very expensive, we're talking about (£2-3 per puff/eclair) but in comparison to bread, it's  relatively a luxury item.
